I want to call this a win for the good guys, but in truth, it just leaves ashes in my mouth even though the only outcome which wouldn’t have been a travesty has apparently been achieved:
Happy Valentines Day Brisenia.
If your mother hasn’t told you yet, a Pima County jury found your killer, Minuteman Shawna Forde, guilty of the murder of you and your father as well as one count of attempted first-degree murder; one count of burglary in the first-degree; one count of aggravated assault, serious physical injury; one count of aggravated assault, deadly weapon/dangerous instrument; one count of armed robbery; and one count of aggravated armed robbery.
That’s enough to put her away for her natural life, if she is spared the death penalty.
You finally found justice sweetheart.
If you’re wondering who Brisenia Flores is, or what the circumstances surrounding her death are/were, Dave Neiwert over at Crooks & Liars has the most complete (and infuriating/horrifying) run-down:
On May 30 of 2009, a woman named Shawna Forde, who led an offshoot unit of Minutemen who ran armed border patrols for patriotic “fun”. Forde’s gang had decided to go “operational,” which meant they concocted a scheme to raid drug smugglers and take their money and drugs and use it to finance a border race war and “start a revolution against the government”. They targeted the Flores home, which had neither money nor drugs, based on dubious information. They convinced Flores to let them in by claiming to be law-enforcement officers seeking fugitives, then shot him point-blank in the head when he questioned them and wounded his wife, Gina Gonzalez. And then, while she pleaded for her life, they shot Brisenia in cold blood in the head. (Her sister, fortunately, was sleeping over at a friend’s.)
You can listen to the wounded mother’s 911 call here.
There’s more at the link…if you have the stomach for it. I almost don’t, except that, much like the more-recent murder of another nine year old girl in Arizona by an armed nutcase, I force myself to read/watch/listen so I can know as much as possible about what happened and so I can tell it as accurately and completely as possible. That’s the only way I’m able, in my small way, to help make sure these girls didn’t die in vain and that (hopefully), fewer others have to in the future.
Good riddance to Jared Loughner and especially to Shawna Forde. Where Loughner appears to have been a deeply disturbed but only vaguely political killer whose murder of a nine-year old girl appears, horribly, to have been little more than situational and accidental, Forde knew exactly what she was doing and went into that house intending to do it. And the media figures who enable and even subtly encourage such violence (even though all of them will profess shock and surprise that anyone took their violent and apocalyptic rhetoric literally or seriously) should pause today, after the guilty verdict in the Forde case, have a good look at the picture above, and admit that they are morally culpable in that little girl’s death.
And the rest of you well-meaning but chronically easily-distracted media: this isn’t a tragic local story – it gets at the heart of what’s rotten in American public/political life right now. Cover this story, don’t skip it.
